Anniversary Mine
Water quality training and restoration projectAnniversary Mine is situated near Herberton.
A Mbabaram pilot study to rehabilitate a mine site with endemic seeds/seedlings and training to test the water quality of grant creek, a tributary of the Wild River.
The project took place between 2014-2016. Mbabaram Traditional Owners were trained and educated in water quality testing and the processes to rehabilitate a mine site to exclude toxic runoff into Grant Creek. Skills were also developed on how to identify and monitor weed infestation and the appropriate native plants for seed collection. The seeds were grown up by Kuranda EnviroCare, one of our partners in the project, and planted outside the mine adit (opening) along the banks of Grant Creek. A major part of the project was to create partnerships with Government departments and non-government organisations such as Terrain NRM (who financed the project), the Mitchell River Watershed Management Group, Tableland Regional Council, and Kuranda EnviroCare. We also acknowledge the geology experts who initially helped with planning and logistics; Rob Ryan and Graeme Grieves. Dr Pam Schultz was the consultant for the project.
