Mbabaram Cultural Heritage project

The Mitchell River Traditional Custodians Advisory Group held “Skills on Country” workshops over 13 days in 2014. Funding for the project was provided through the Indigenous Land and Sea grant program. The program, designed by the young Traditional Owners of Mbabaram, Wokomin, Kuku Djungan and Western Yalanji, was to strengthen connections to Country.

To achieve these outcomes archaeologist Dr Asa Ferrier and a mapping expert Tim Daniel from Wilderness Expeditions were employed to teach. During the workshops the young participants acquired skills and information on how to record cultural heritage sites, orienteering skills and aspects of tourism operations. These projects aim to give the participants the foundation skills required to work as Indigenous rangers, providing an employment pathway on their own country.
